With tomato prices skyrocketing to Rs150 per kg this week we have all been forced to relook at the way we’re cooking as many of us tighten our purse strings.
With these pocket-friendly alternatives, you can still whip up delicious meals without breaking the bank. Remember, creativity knows no limits.
Let’s take a look at some ingredients that can serve as alternatives to tomatoes.
Add a hint of tamarind pulp or paste to recipes like dals, curries or stir-fries instead of tomatoes and it comes close to the same flavour.
Roasted Bell Peppers Paste & Lauki
Roast the bell peppers and puree them in the food processor with lauki/ dudhi.
Lauki/ Dudhi & Imli
Bottle gourd as a replacement for tomato? Add a little imli to grated lauki, and you’ll have the taste and texture of tomatoes in your food.
As tangy and sweet-ish as tomatoes, raw mangoes are also texturally similar when cooked properly. Use less raw mangoes than you would with tomatoes.
It provides body to the curry and the right kind of tartness. Whisk the yoghurt and add it towards the end of the cooking process to reduce the chances of it splitting.
The simple kaddu/ pumpkins have a natural sweetness & creamy texture in puree form & it is literally half the cost of tamatar.
