I was asked to get salsa and chips for a potluck dinner this weekend and I was quite tired of the regular tomato jalapeno one that I make. It’s super easy and super yummy, but I was bored. That’s when I remembered my mom’s fruit salsa recipe that I had tucked away somewhere. After a bit of hunting, I found it under a whole pile of recipes that I hadn’t made in a while.

Totally inspired and very excited about re-making my old favourite with a little twist – cinnamon tortilla chips to go with it. So off to the market, I went. The fruit salsa that I make uses apples, strawberries and kiwis. You could find your own flavours and mix them up – mangoes and berries also work well together.

All three fruits are a combination of sweet and tart, giving the salsa an amazing flavour. Did you know that a kiwi actually contains more Vitamin C than an orange and that apples are fibre-rich and help manage your digestive system pretty effectively?

For Salsa

  • 2 Kiwis
  • 2 Cups of Strawberries
  • 1 Apple
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • Juice of 1/2 a lemon

For Cinnamon Chips

  • 6 Tortillas
  • 4 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1-2 Tbsp Cinnamon Powder ( as per your taste)

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 200° C.

For the Salsa

  • Remove the strawberry caps and peel the apples and kiwis.
  • Finely dice the fruits and put them into a big bowl (Smaller the pieces better the flavour).
  • Add 1/4 cup sugar and the lemon juice. The lemon juice will prevent the apples from getting brown and adds the perfect zing to balance the sugar.
  • Mix it all really well and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This is essential since the flavours need time to come together. This can be made ahead and left overnight too.

For the Cinnamon Chips

  • Melt the butter in the microwave.
  • Lay out the tortillas and liberally brush them with the melted butter
  • Mix the sugar and the cinnamon powder and sprinkle on the buttered tortillas completely.
  • Slice up the tortilla sheets like you would a pizza and lay them on a baking sheet/tray.
  • Your oven will be warm by now. Pop them in the oven for approximately 7 minutes

However, we recommend you keep an eye on them since each oven works a little differently. You wouldn’t want to end up with charred chips instead of crispy ones.

That’s it !! Your fruit salsa with cinnamon chips is ready. I had a hard time resisting them till I got to the party. Everyone just lapped it up and was asking for more. Happy dance!! I love it when people want more.
