It is easily one of those things we are most ashamed of but unfortunately it continues to this very day.

Former PM Dr Manmohan Singh called India’s declining sex ratio a national shame nearly four years ago. But even the latest census data shows that families prefer a male child to a female child.

National newspaper The Hindu wrote that a series of studies show that even today a couple will keep having children until a boy is born. In some parts of the country data shows that prenatal sex determination tests are still used even though they are specifically banned.

Data shows that there are 0.9 million families with all six girls, and 0.3 million families with all six boys. According to the 2011 census data the sex ratio has declined from 927 girls for every 1000 boys in 2001 to just 914 girls to every 1000 boys in 2011.

According to census data families with three boys, two boys and a girl were far more common than families with three girls, two girls and a boy.
