The experience of childbirth in India is often a nightmare for mothers and their babies across the country. Across all social strata, we see disrespect, abuse, and the loss of dignity of the childbearing women. What should be a beautiful experience in a woman’s life, has left many women traumatised due to our mismanaged health care system

Sentiments Behind The Conference

Whether you’re a modern, urban, educated Indian woman who can afford to choose private maternity healthcare or a village woman who will travel several hours by bullock cart to the nearest health centre or a homeless mother in the streets, your birthing experience can leave each one of you traumatized and in some cases compromise  the safety of you and your baby. Indian women are ready to take back the respect that every childbearing woman deserves and the Human Rights in Childbirth Conference aims to do just that.

Who Will Be Attending?

The Human Rights in Childbirth Global Conference in India will address how maternity care can optimise maternal and infant health in a respectful, culturally sensitive and within the human rights framework. The conference will have people from different fields – maternity care providers, public health professionals, lawyers, activists, policy makers and reproductive justice advocates.

What are Human Rights in Childbirth?

  • The right to informed consent and refusal – Did you know that every test, medication, intervention during pregnancy and childbirth has both pros and cons and all of these are optional?
  • The right to health - Most hospitals rely on outdated routine practices when actually it is your right to receive current, evidence-based, individualised care.
  • The right to self-determination – The mother is supposed to be the decision maker during care, with the clinician providing only reliable, objective options of care.
  • The right to physical integrity - Medical professionals can’t touch your body without consent.
  • The right to privacy  The mother is entitled to choose the circumstances in which she gives birth
