When children are growing up, they need all the help they can get to develop their hand muscles and their coordination. We’ve put together simple but extremely useful activities with things that are easily available at home and easy on the wallet too. These activities not only build finger muscles and enhance hand-eye coordination, but they can also keep your kids engaged for hours, giving you some breathing time!

Button Tracing
Material:Â
- Paper
- Marker
- Buttons
Instructions:
- Draw various shapes on the paper and have your child trace the shape using buttons. Picking up tiny buttons with fingers will help them develop a pincer grasp (thumb and first finger together), which is a necessary precursor to holding a crayon.
Stack The Craft Sticks
Material:
- Coloured Craft/Ice-cream Sticks
Instructions:
- Have your child stack the craft sticks horizontally. You could make it more interesting and have your child stack according to various coloured patterns. This will help them work on sorting and building skills. It also works wonders for developing balancing and concentration skills.
Pipe Cleaner Colander
Material:
- Pipe cleaners
- Colander
Instructions:
- Ask your child to put together pipe cleaners through the holes on a colander. This activity will encourage precise hand movements and higher level hand-eye coordination. It gets them ready for more refined fine motor skills such as lacing beads into a string.
Flip The Pancake
Material:
- A small pan
- Fake Pancakes (Foam paper circles)
- Spatula
Instructions:
- Have your child flip the pancakes. You could increase the difficulty level by challenging them to use only one hand. These types of “playâ€_x009d_ activities and manipulation skills will actually help prepare a child to hold and use a crayon. The ability to do so is the first step in learning to colour, draw and ultimately write.
Pour The Sand
Material:
- Sand/salt
- Funnel
- Bottle
Instructions:
- Have you child pour sand into a bottle through a funnel. The most important principle behind the pouring activity is “control of error”. The child learns to be more cautious and focused, which helps eliminate chances of mistakes and improves their hand-eye coordination too.
