The Rio Olympics are a mere few days away and it is time to get to know the sportspeople representing our country at the Olympics! Scheduled from the 5th to the 21st of August, the world’s biggest sports spectacle continues to enthrall viewers and sports fanatics. The Indian contingent for the Olympics has a 120 athlete and is the largest team to represent the country so far.

Highlights:

  • All of 20 years, Dutee Chand’s achievements are huge. She comes from a modest background and is the daughter of a weaver couple.
  • Dutee fought hard against the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), challenging a ban for detecting high levels of male hormone testosterone in her body and has come clean in this legal tussle.
  • Her dream of contesting the Olympics came true recently when she clocked 11.30 seconds in the heats and 11.24 seconds in the finals (against the cut off of 11.32 seconds) at the Athletic Meet in Almaty.
  • In addition to her excellent “track” record, Dutee is currently pursuing law at KIIT University.
  • Just like MS Dhoni’s early days, Dutee is currently working as a ticket collector in Central Railways, Mumbai.
  • She would be the first Indian woman to qualify for the 100m event after 36 long years when the veteran PT Usha competed in the blue-riband event in the 1980 Moscow Games.
  • She is one of India’s strong hopes for a medal in the 100-metre dash in the Olympics.
