In a landmark decision this morning, the Bombay High Court has directed the Haji Ali Dargah Trust to allow women into the inner sanctum. This is a welcome move for women empowerment (#RightToPray) and allowing their presence in religious institutions. Here are few things you should know about this latest judgement:

  1. The Haji Ali Dargah Trust imposed a sudden ban in 2012, preventing women from entering the inner sanctum of the mosque. This created quite an uproar and raised many eyebrows.
  2. A PIL (Public Interest Litigation) was filed by Noor Jahan of the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan in 2014 and the Bombay HC gave the final verdict favouring the petitioner today.
  3. This comes in the wake of protests and agitations claiming equal rights for women to offer their prayers in the inner sanctum and the right to be treated equally according to Articles 14, 15, 19 and 25 of the Indian Constitution.
  4. The HC bench (Justice V M Kanade and Justice Revati Mohite-Dere) granted a stay on this order for a period of six weeks on a plea by the Haji Ali Trust, which wanted to go on appeal in the Supreme Court sooner.
  5. Earlier this year, the judicial system had given similar verdicts allowing women to enter inside the famous Shani Shingnapur temple in Maharashtra and the  Trimbakeshwar temple in Nasik.
