Well, the world is changing drastically! And so will it continue to… Technology is advancing like never before, new fields are being exposed and the rat race that we were used to has sped up double over the years. Do you know what this means? The competition will only get more challenging for our kids and not only for academics. I know what you must be wondering, are they ready to face a world where technology, skills and intelligence will rule? But wait! Let me ask you-

Are We As Parents Ready For It Too?

Speaking with the wonderful and dynamic principal Mr Arjun Rao of the JBCN School, Oshiwara. I have come to realise that not only our kids but even we have to gear up for the 21st century and all its changes. As parents, we are worried for our kids, but here’s a simple fact, our kids will navigate through and find their way. The thought in question is will we accept the path they choose?

“I think many of us as parents, we look at only the data. We look at marks, at grades and at reports and we allow that to be a basis for a very large judgement that we make about our children, about what they have been taught…” – Arjun Rao, Principal Of JBCN Oshiwara

I agree with this- we as parents and educators need to understand the need for kids to learn beyond what is printed in their textbooks. Past is very important, but the number of things happening in the present and things that we already see coming in the future… they need to learn more about these things.

How Do We Integrate This In Schools?

Along with the curriculum, it is very important for schools to build skills in kids. Exams are necessary- fine… but what about these skills that have to be learnt and not by heart?

“It’s really important for schools to continously engage with the world outseld their walls and their gates and understand what is important today.” “As educators, we find it very difficult to look beyound an exam or the school calender or the next imprtant thing…” – Arjun Rao – Principal Of JBCN Oshiwara

Along with examinations- group projects, group discussions, field trips, and workshops should also be given a boost.

What Is Expected Out Of School Vs. What JBCN Wants To Integrate

“Dailouge is essential. The minute you explain the logic behind why we have a programme- everyone’s on board.” -Arjun Rao – Principal Of JBCN Oshiwara

At JBCN, they have introduced a curriculum that involves skills like entrepreneurship and many others. He tells us how he believes, the textbook knowledge is not enough. there are many more factors that educators need to take into consideration like- emotional quotient, mental health, etc.
