For the longest time, people have said 8 hours of sleep is ideal for any age. Even recommended by doctors. But recently The nonprofit National Sleep Foundation and a panel of 18 prominent medical scientists and researchers reviewed over 300 sleep studies to try and finally find an answer.

The short answer is, of course, “it depends.” There’s no perfect amount of sleep time that can fit every person. A lot of parents are in a rush to skip the afternoon naps for our children in order to get them to sleep earlier. We complain of kids finding it hard to wake up for early morning in school and feeling the fatigue all day long. A recent updated list of sleep duration recommendations for all age groups was recently published in Sleep Health Journal.

Here is the list:

  • Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours each day.
  • Infants (4-11 months): 12-15 hours each day.
  • Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours each day.
  • Preschoolers (3-5): 10-13 hours each day.
  • School age children (6-13): 9-11 hours each day.
  • Teenagers (14-17): 8-10 hours each day.
  • Younger adults (18-25): 7-9 hours each day.
  • Adults (26-64): 7-9 hours each day.
  • Older adults (65+): 7-8 hours each day.

These are of course recommended hours but with our current lifestyle, it may not be easy to get a good night sleep. It is however important for the body and mind.
