In today’s review we talk about author Anusha Veluswamy’s “My Amma’s White Stone Mookuthi” A brilliant storybook for kids aged 5-8 years. Scroll down to read our take on it.

About the book:

My Amma’s White Stone Mookuthi, is penned by Anusha Veluswamy- an architect, educator, mom and contributor at KSP- who has penned useful reads for parents. You can read her articles here.

The book, on the simple joys of life, teaches today’s busy and impatient kids to stop and smell the roses. Children love everything about their moms- that’s their beauty. I am a mom of 2 now, but I still recollect the special scent of my mom’s blanket when I used to cuddle with her in the bed. The way moms dress up, their sarees, their anklets, every small detail is ingrained in a child’s mind for years to come.

This little boy in the story, Bose, is enchanted by his mom’s nose ring- known as Mookuthi, in Tamil. Love the way how the author brings in the native feel with simple words, without the need to translate them and make it all English in every line. (The meanings are spelt in an exclusive Glossary at the end). The setting- in Tamilnadu- is brought to life with illustrator Abhilasha Khatri’s amazing illustrations.

The book also subtly brings in the concept of loss and grief (nothing too serious, don’t panic, parents) and how today’s kids take it in versus how they should.

The subtle message, the poetic narrative, coupled with a heart-warming tale, makes this one of our favourite reads of this season. You can buy the book here.
