A lot of the new age toys never existed when we were kids- for instance, the ones that use Augmented and Virtual Reality. Also, some of the new books that my child reads at 4 are probably what I would have been glancing at 8-9 years. Their comprehension is far superior and that’s why, we as parents, need to make sure we expose them to the latest of books, toys and cartoons.
But some things never change, right?! The good ol’ tales from Panchatantra that sneak in a moral thought the fascinating world of animals have existed from time immemorial (300 AD, it is said!) and it is only fair that we pass on the joy of reading these stories to our children as well.

What is the book?
The book that’s on our shelf this week is Panchatantra- originally written by the famous scholar Vishnu Sharma and translated by Rohini Chowdhury and is published by Penguin Random House India. The author is an established writer in the world of children’s books and has a lot of great reads for kids to her credit, like Mathemagic, The Most Powerful Number Of All,
What is it about?
Written long, long ago by the famous Brahmin scholar Vishnu Sharma, who is apparently known to have penned these moral stories for generations to come, at the age of eighty! Originally written to educate the princes, and explain to the role of a dutiful kind, and how subjects need to be treated equally, the stories stay relevant till date. This book, translates the essence of the stories and the encompassing morals, retaining the original witty style.

Why is this book on our shelf?
- There is a copy of the Panchatantra in every household and I too got hold of mine, used 2 decades ago! But times change, and the language of writing also changes with each translation. This work by Rohini Chowdhury makes sure the narration is simple, smooth and retains the essence of each of the stories from the original.
- Teaching to kids in a language they love. And that remains the highlight of Panchatantra. conveying the various emotions and helping kids understand the different traits of a person through animals, this book succeeds in conveying a moral to the kids, in a manner they will enjoy.
- Suggested for kids aged 8 and above, this book also serves as a right bedtime book and you could read these stories to younger ones too.
