On The Book Shelf: Brown Like Dosas, Samosas And Sticky Chikki

The book seems to be more relevant to all of us as parents than ever before as we are raising kids in a generation that is increasingly growing up in an age where visuals will play a much larger role than words. You are your decisions and fears, likes and dislikes…You are so much more than just your skin and body…Brown has absolutely lovely, dreamy illustrations by Heetal Dattani Joshi and words woven in rhyme by Rebecca Manari.

This book from FunokPlease is really special and one of the biggest reasons is that it propagates that your thoughts and actions define you as a person and not your skin colour. The book seems to be more relevant to all of us as parents than ever before as we are raising kids in a generation that is increasingly growing up in an age where visuals will play a much larger role than words. Where every profile picture uploaded generates a 1000 clicks and you take over a 100 pictures before you upload the perfect selfie. Times where magazine covers and role models are skinny and airbrushed. But these are also times where women stand up for who they are and want to be known for their thoughts and actions. They are not scared to take on power houses of the world to voice their opinions.

brown is lovely

The book is about a little girl called Samaira who is a little chocolate-coloured girl who loves colours. But what happens when she meets a strange purple lady who offers to change her into a shade of white? Will Samaira give into the temptation or will she stand up for what she believes is right? In her conversations with Anahi you will also see how she shares that brown is so delicious just like chocolate, chikki, samosas and dosa. When you make books for kids they need to be fun, visual treats and ofcourse a great story. Brown is just that and more. Without being pedantic it addresses this issue that’s been a native with Indians for time immemorial and don’t think will leave us soon.
