It’s time to keep your date with the flamingos visiting the Sewri mudflats. It is a must to travel with your young ones to show them the wonders of the birds that migrate to Sewri each winter.

You could have a guided tour with The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) or Travel Logs. You could also try and explore the place on your own with your muchkin on any of the mornings when you feel like a charged early morning.

What to expect:

1. A trip with your kids to see almost 15,000 pink beauties. They travel in search of food from their breeding grounds in the Rann of Kutch.(Follow this visit with a visit to the Prince of Wales Museum where they have the bird stuffing to see how these beauties lay eggs on mounds. Read our review of the museum here)

2. Along with the flamingos you will catch a sight of other birds such as gulls, herons, terns, sandpipers, egrets, ibises, plovers and kingfishers in addition to Mumbai’s pink-feathered friends. It is a wonderful sight which both you and yours kids will be in awe of.

What do I need to carry?

Well a pair of great binoculars incase you plan to go solo or a great camera that has a great zoom facility. If you are visiting with BNHS then they do set up a binocular for the visitors.

We would also advice you to carry a small back pack with a dry snack for you and the child. A bottle of water, caps and sunglasses.

Clothing: Keep it comfortable with shorts, leggings and a cotton tee. Make sure you have your sneakers on for all the tight rope walking you need to do.

When is the best time to visit Sewri?

Try and get there in the morning, between the high tide and low tide. Also if you go in the mornings, the trains will be less crowded.
