As a parent, my day is spent juggling household chores, work, kids, and a million other things. But I recently came across the LEGO® PLAY Report which made me sit up and think about the time I spend playing with my kids. The research shows – 7 in 10 kids (70%) love learning new things through PLAY whereas 39% of children feel that their parents’ jobs get in the way of family PLAY. And guess what, 85% of families said PLAY makes them happier. Looking at these stats, I realized how important PLAY is for my kids’ well-being.
When children PLAY, they laugh, experiment, and don’t worry about getting things wrong and that’s the beauty of it all. PLAY gives children the safe space they need to pick up skills that will help them thrive today and, in the years to come. We want every child to have the joyful, playful experiences they need to grow, now and in the future. Through PLAY, children can hone their ways of thinking, creating, and testing ideas while being resilient to failures! All skills they’ll need to progress and develop throughout their lives.
With so many hats that we wear, we tend to forget that our kids only want us to sit and PLAY and just be there to see their little hands build what their buzzing minds are imagining at that moment. There are no rules when it comes to playing and we should allow our kids to just have fun while learning and playing. The way their faces light up when they can make something out of nothing makes it all worthwhile.
I will be taking the PLAY pledge at the LEGO® PLAYground to make sure that I give my kids 5 hours of PLAY every day and capture their million-dollar smiles! All the mommies out there, join me to witness the LEGO® PLAYground and take the PLAY pledge this summer!
