Writing this on International Women’s Day, I’m completely overwhelmed by the amount of content and creativity out there driving home the message of gender equality. And yet, since I’ve become a father, I keep hoping on every March 8th, that my daughters will never understand the relevance of the day. Let me explain.
Any social movement (such as feminism or independence) comes with an in-built obsoletion. Unless it continually progresses to eliminate the reason for its existence, it cannot claim success. And that is why, I can only hope that as my daughters grow up, this day born out of gender inequality, out of marginalisation of women’s rights and the need to elevate and celebrate the ‘fairer sex’ has no real relevance in the not-so-distant future.
