On the occasion of #WorldEarthDay, and World Environment Day, we put out green logos in our Instagram bios and shared a few WhatsApp messages, but what are we doing more? Did we take time out and explain the importance of sustainability to our kids? How are we, as parents, influencing and inspiring our children to take the right step forward? Are we accepting the sustainable way of living and teaching our kids to do the same? This is what I learnt from Vani Murthy and you can too!

Here is a throwback to an episode on waste-management we did with Vani Murthy, the founding Member of Solid Waste Management Round Table, and the composting enthusiast talks to us about her journey towards slow life. She is a 60-year-old “Worm Rani” who is inspiring youngsters to compost and manage waste sustainably.

5 Things I Learnt From Vani Murthy:

5 R’s

There are not 3, but 5 R’s that we must follow in our lives, the last one being most important.

  • Reduce
  • Recycle
  • Reuse
  • Repair
  • Refuse

The Throwaway Culture:

One of the things that has become a very dangerously routine in our lives is the use of plastic bags. Have you ever wondered where they end up? Rather but things that will last you long and are not a problem is dispose of too. Like wooden/ steel or glass utensils and cutlery and cloth bags.

Waste Segregation:

Here’s a topic that must be a dinner table conversation! Are you teaching your kids the importance of segregating dry/wet and e- waste? It is the need of the hour!

Waste Of Resources Is Waste Of Energy:

When you waste something, you are not only wasting the resource but the energy that went in in producing it. As we know our fuels are decreasing and we need to be extremely careful and mindful of what we buy and ow we use it.

Learn From The Old:

Our grandparents knew the right way to live. Before this fast-life and disposable products came into our lives, people were living sustainably. So, it’s time to look back and learn some lessons to save the little that we have for our kids.

Share this with fellow parents and help raise awareness about sustainable living!
