Nutritionist and Deep Health Coach, Simrun Chopra shares her absolutely inspirational journey from a total health transformation to changing lives, running her own business and doing it all while being a mother

This is episode 3/15 of a campaign by Kidsstoppress and Instagram celebrating moms who are balancing both business and motherhood. It is truly inspirational.

How it all started for Simrun:

They say to lift off and succeed, you need to first hit rock bottom and Simrun’s story is not so different in that regard. After her baby, Simrun suffered arduously from postpartum depression.

When you have a C section, people don’t talk about this enough that you feel like you just had major surgery and nobody cares about you, right? It’s all about the baby.

After a surgery like that, you’re supposed to get the rest, which you don’t get. So you’re tired, you’re not sleeping, you’re not focusing on recovery. The body doesn’t look or feel right. It’s sluggish because of the hormonal changes. Everything is all over the place. Postpartum depression is crazy, and Simrun’s was no different.

To make it worse, soon after the baby Simrun’s back went out. She collapsed, dropped her baby, (fortunately on the bed) and couldn’t walk for four weeks.

“I was crawling around the house. I needed people to help me to sit on the pot”

After the MRI, Simrun was given the news that she had to lose weight. She had to work on herr muscles. Otherwise she would have to live like this. Fortunately or unfortunately it was an extreme turning point. But Simrun thinks that was the wake-up call she needed.

Where it’s going:

Simrun’s health took a complete turnaround after that point. It was a long process with lots of hard work but she never gave up. Her transformation was mesmerizing, not only to her but everyone who saw her change as well. Even then she knew her story, her health transformation could be her business.

I think the turning point for me was these two women.

One wrote to me saying how her husband used to lock her in the room and then go to work and come back and would decide what she could and could not eat because he wanted her to lose weight. I didn’t even know that existed.

Then there was this other woman who had a baby. She had gained an exponential amount of weight, about 100 kg plus. She wanted to lose weight so she’d been doing a cabbage soup diet and she was feeding her baby. She was really struggling and she was doing it because her husband had left her and was living with another woman and said he’d only come back to her if she lost weight and looked like she looked before.

In the beginning there was sheer anger for Simrun. She wanted to do something, so she came up with something she could give that is affordable, that anyone can follow, that can really help people. Never reccomending quick fixes or the easy way out.

My values, for example, and my code of ethics is like, I don’t do detox, I don’t do really fast, I won’t do something because it’ll make me a quick buck, for me, my values are that my credibility comes above everything else.

On work-life balance:

What’s truly inspiring is that when she was starting out, Simrun was the sole videographer, editor, model, and mom. And while she did it all, she realized there is nothing like work-life balance.

“When you say when we say work-life balance, we are assuming that you’re spending time at home. But that balance in what we do in deep health is are you getting time for yourself? Do you get time to wind down? Do you get time to relax? Most women get home from work at the right time, but do you tick off those other boxes, or do you automatically go from work of office to work at home?

The lack of work life balance for working women is a real problem and Simrun wants to address that issue head on herself. Being a mom and an entrepreneur is a 24-hour job. You never switch off. That’s why she wants to talk more about balance and mental health.

Through her platform and Instagram, Simrun now reaches out to women across the country to
ensure that women across India, irrespective of the socioeconomic groups, have somewhere to go to for believing in themselves and for getting a healthy solution.

“I am so happy to be a part of many transformations. I hope to spread the message that women need downtime for themselves too. It’s time we stop thinking about mom-guilt, and focus on ourselves too.”
