Is it sufficient to raise kids to be safe in the physical world? How safe do they feel in the virtual and digital world that they spend too much time on? How are companies like Meta working on supervision tools that help keep our children safe in the Instagram world?

Recently Mansi Zaveri was a part of the Meta #DigitalSurakshaSummit recently to talk on Creating Meaningful Experiences for Parents and Youth Online. The panel also included Natasha Jog – Head of Instagram & Policy Programs, media professional Roshan Abbas, Dr Samir Parikh, Director of Mental Health & Behavioural Sciences at Fortis Mental Health and Neela Kaushik Founder GurgaonMoms. Minister Smriti Irani, also spoke at the summit on what it takes to keep our kids safe and secure behind the screens. As the Minister of Women and Child Development, she elicits the importance of government measures, digital literacy skills that our kids( and us) need to be aware of and lots more.

Smriti Irani really stressed the importance of having strong laws and tools to hold accountable those who harm others online. When she talked about those ten-year-olds who have access to social media, it made me realize the true risks our kids face, especially with fake accounts and the trolls out there. It’s important for us parents to cross that thin line between protection and privacy and have an open conversation with our kids about these things.
