Do your kids love chocolate? Like something other than plain milk? But the amount of sugar in health drinks has always made me sceptical about giving it to them.

Nutritionist and wellness consultant Neha Sahaya shares a healthy chocolate powder for children and adults with just 5 ingredients

If you’re looking for a healthy and tasty substitute similar in taste to Bournvita, try this recipe!

Packed with natural ingredients and offering a perfect balance of protein, fibre, carbs, and healthy fats, this homemade chocolate powder is a delectable treat that will energize you and your little ones.

The Power-Packed Ingredients

1. Almonds: Loaded with essential nutrients, almonds are a fantastic source of healthy fats, protein, and vitamin E. Soaking and removing their skin enhances their digestibility and nutritional profile.

2. Oats: Oats are a superb source of dietary fibre and complex carbohydrates, contributing to sustained energy levels and improved digestion.

3. Foxnuts (Makhana): A traditional snack idea in many cultures, foxnuts are rich in protein and low in calories. They also provide a satisfying crunch to the chocolate powder.

4. Cocoa Powder (or Cacao Powder): Cocoa or cacao powder not only imparts a delightful chocolate flavour but is also known for its antioxidant properties and potential mood-boosting effects.

5. Jaggery (or Coconut Powder): Choosing jaggery or coconut powder as a natural sweetener adds depth to the flavour profile without the excessive refined sugar commonly found in commercial products.

Method:

  1. Begin by soaking almonds overnight and then removing their skins for enhanced texture and nutrient absorption.
  2. Dry roast the almonds until they attain a light brown hue. Repeat this process with oats and foxnuts (makhanas) to enhance their flavours.
  3. Once roasted ingredients have cooled, blend them in a food processor or blender until finely ground. Scrape down the sides as needed to ensure uniform blending.
  4. Introduce the rich flavour of cocoa powder and the natural sweetness of jaggery (or coconut powder) to the blend. Continue blending until you achieve a smooth, powdery consistency.
  5. To ensure a silky texture, sieve the mixture and transfer it to an airtight container. This delightful chocolate powder can be stored for up to three months at room temperature.

To indulge in this nutrient-packed delight, simply mix the homemade chocolate powder with your choice of hot or cold milk. Whether you prefer dairy or plant-based milk, this versatile concoction is guaranteed to tantalize your taste buds and leave you feeling energized.
