Bus Snacks To Pack For School In This Heat

Kids are sure to get hungry on the bus ride home from school. These snacks don’t spoil in the Indian summer heat and will tide the kids over till they reach home for a more wholesome meal.

The heat has overtaken the entire country and everyone is sweltering away. Schools are reopening across the country, alarms are being reset and kids have started complaining about going back to their school routine. The scorching heat makes it difficult for me to come up with food that they can snack on their bus ride back home; things that won’t spoil in the heat.

I’ve narrowed it down to a few that have worked for me. If you’re a mom like me looking for ideas, here are a few.

Baked Mathi

Mathi or mathri is a great snack that you can put in the tiffin box. Not too hard and not too soft – that’s the key to a good mathi. Mini mathis with or without mango pickle can be sent without the fear of it spoiling In fact, mathi can keep for days. If you want to try making mathis at home, we have a healthy baked mathri recipe that everyone is sure to love.

Makhanas

Makhanas or fox nuts are a good source of protein, carbohydrates, fibre, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, iron and zinc. they are also high in fibre and low in calories. You can toss them in ghee with some chaat masala or peri-peri seasoning or some even like them coated with jaggery (gur). We have a yummy butter makhana recipe too.

Khakra

This Gujarati speciality is a very crisp and light papad type snack that is healthy and tasty and you don't have to worry about it spoiling in the summer heat.  You can easily get different varieties of khakra in the market. It's light on the tummy but at the same time a healthy snack to tide the kids over till they reach home.  

Khajoor Pak

Khajoor Pak is made with dates, gond (edible gum) and nuts all of which are rich in protein, iron, fibre, calcium and vitamins. It protects your eyes and skin from sun damage and keeps them healthy. Chivda

Normally chivda is made with puffed rice, peanuts and tempered with some seasoning, It's easy to munch on, on the way home. If you want a healthy chivda recipe, we have one for you made with oats, Its tasty and easy to carry in the snack box.  

Sonth Ke Laddu

Sonth or ginger powder is a great thing to add to your diet during the summer in small quantities. It helps with stomach disorders, flatulence and is an immunity booster as well. The kids love sonth ke laddu since they're sweet and moms love the sonth ke laddu recipe because it's easy to make with ingredients that are super healthy. 

Trail Mix

This is a great snack for the bus, for garden time and when moms and kids are rushing between classes. We have 2 yummy trail mix recipes that are perfect for snack time.

No Bake Energy Balls

This is a great snack that is healthy and tasty. Made with oats, peanut butter and honey, this no-bake energy bites recipe is simple to make. 

Baked Multi-Grain Chakli

Chakli or murku is a snack that won't spoil in the summer heat. There are lots of different types of chakli available in the market If you're feeling adventurous and want to make and bake your own, this multigrain-chakli recipe is a good one to start with. 

Date & Walnut Truffles

Dates and walnuts are a super healthy combination. These date-walnut truffles keep well in the heat and will keep them satisfied till they reach home. Try this date-walnut truffles recipe.

Cucumber, Carrot Sticks, Grapes

Freeze these fruits/veggies in ziplock bags the night before and put them in the tiffin just before the kids leave in the morning. So by the time they eat it on their way back from school, these will thaw out but still remain cold enough for them to enjoy 

Tips To Pack  Bus Snack Box

  • In case you want to give your child fruit for the ride back home but are sceptical whether it will last, you can try this trick, Freeze a sponge at night. Place the frozen sponge in a Ziplock bag before placing it in the snack box. This will act as an ice pack and prevent the fruit from spoiling. 
  • Food like grapes and cheese can also be frozen. By the time your child will eat it in school, it will thaw out and still remain fresh and cool enough to enjoy.
