For the last few nights, my younger daughter has been having trouble sleeping, which means my wife and older daughter are struggling too.

Me? I’m sleeping well, thanks for asking.

As the wife puts it, “I need to be woken up with a sledgehammer.” Even after that rather violent act, I’m most likely to just roll over and go back to sleep. Which means, when my younger one interrupts the still of the night with her piercing screams, not for me the startled waking moment, and not for me the run to her bedroom.

Yet, my wife is able to react to the slightest squeak or whimper that comes from behind closed doors from over 15 feet away. It’s a skill, really, that I believe is part genetic and part cultivated. Nature and nurture. Her near feline listening skills mean that she can jump out of bed in less time than it takes to say my last name. I’m not sure how I’m even supposed to compete with that.
