Over the years, movies and shows have often been blamed for typecasting people and characters. And thankfully, in recent times, with more realistic portrayals and character sketches, that is changing. Slowly, but definitely.

Like the recently released Masaba Masaba series on Netflix. The one thing that struck people and parents, in particular, was Kusha Kapila’s role as Nicole- the PR busy bee of Masaba.

Why Was Her Character So Relatable?

She is shown as someone who is spot on in her game. However, just when she is about to be hired, her future boss, Masaba notices that she is pregnant. In reality, employers pause when they find their key recruits on the verge of going on an extensive leave soon. They see them as a “liability” and not as an efficient resource. That is sadly, the reality.

But thankfully, Masaba, pauses for a micro-second only to tell Nicole (Kusha Kapila’s character) that she is hired, right away!

Nicole is portrayed as a firebrand, on her toes, and one who saves Masaba from many PR disasters! Gladly, she is shown as someone who is passionate about her work- one that is common across the spectrum, whether you are a male or female, whether you are pregnant or a parent or a non-parent.

It is high time we need to normalize recognizing working parents, (even pregnant ones) and not see them with a different lens. There have been many instances when opportunities or accolades are missed or bypassed, just because one is a pregnant mom or a parent- and that needs to change.

We published this article a while ago on when is the right time to announce your pregnancy at work. A lot of expectant moms loved it. If you haven’t read it earlier, click below.
